DLSS 5 Is Now Live in NBA 2K27: What Has Changed?

DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 has officially arrived, making the game the first commercial title to feature NVIDIA’s new generation of neural rendering technology. Unlike traditional upscaling, DLSS 5 uses 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to enhance lighting, materials and visual details with AI. NBA 2K27, developed by Visual Concepts and published by 2K, is the first official showcase for the technology.

What Is DLSS 5?

DLSS has traditionally been associated with technologies such as Super Resolution and Frame Generation. With DLSS 5, NVIDIA is taking the concept further by using neural models to modify and enhance the visual appearance of rendered scenes.

In NBA 2K27, the biggest improvements can be seen on player models. NVIDIA highlights more natural light passing through skin, improved hair lighting, stronger contact shadows and more realistic material responses. The technology also uses information about the scene’s 3D geometry to keep the generated visual details consistent with the underlying models.

That makes DLSS 5 different from a conventional resolution upgrade. NVIDIA describes the technology as a step toward Hollywood-style photorealism in real-time graphics.

How Does DLSS 5 Work in NBA 2K27?

Interestingly, players will not find a setting simply called “DLSS 5” in the game’s graphics menu. Instead, the feature appears as DLSS Neural Rendering.

Players can enable it through the Video Settings menu and then configure other DLSS features, including Super Resolution, Frame Generation and NVIDIA Reflex.

DLSS 5 is completely optional. It is not required for the standard NBA 2K27 experience, and players who experience a performance hit can disable Neural Rendering. The feature can even be toggled during gameplay and replays using the F9 key.

The current implementation requires a GeForce RTX 50-series GPU and NVIDIA’s new Game Ready Driver released on September 3.

How Much Better Does It Look?

NBA 2K27 is an interesting choice for the first DLSS 5 implementation because sports games frequently use close-up camera shots. Players can see faces, skin, hair, uniforms, arena lighting and detailed materials throughout a match.

According to NVIDIA, DLSS 5 improves skin lighting, facial details, hair illumination and contact shadows. These changes can be particularly noticeable during close-ups and replay sequences.

The difference is also easier to appreciate on a large monitor or TV. On smaller displays, some of the changes may be considerably harder to notice.

The Performance Cost

The biggest question surrounding DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 is the amount of performance required to achieve the visual improvements.

NVIDIA’s own figures are impressive. With a GeForce RTX 5090, the company reports up to 370 FPS at 4K using Ultra settings, ray tracing and the full DLSS feature set. At 2560×1440, NVIDIA reports up to 590 FPS on the RTX 5090.

However, independent testing highlights a significant downside. DLSS 5’s Neural Rendering can put a heavy load on the GPU’s Tensor Cores, resulting in substantial performance drops. The impact is especially noticeable on lower-end RTX 50-series cards and at higher resolutions.

This creates an interesting trade-off. Players can get a noticeably more realistic image, but they may have to sacrifice some of their frame rate to achieve it.

The Beginning of a New Graphics Era?

The arrival of DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 is an important milestone for PC graphics. For the first time, players can officially experience how neural rendering can be used to alter and enhance a game’s visual output in real time.

It is still too early to say whether DLSS 5 will become a standard feature across the industry. Its hardware requirements and performance cost could make widespread adoption difficult.

Nevertheless, DLSS 5 in NBA 2K27 clearly demonstrates where NVIDIA sees the future of gaming graphics heading: not simply toward more traditional rendering power, but toward a combination of game-engine data, 3D geometry and neural processing.

NBA 2K27 is therefore more than just the first game supporting DLSS 5. It is the first real-world demonstration of what the next stage of AI-assisted game rendering could look like.
