Blizzard Becomes Microsoft’s Leading Studio: What Happened

Blizzard became Microsoft’s leading studio in fiscal year 2026. According to an internal message from Blizzard president Johanna Faries, the studio delivered the strongest results among Xbox’s major development teams during FY26. The past year was also reportedly Blizzard’s third-best financial year in the company’s history. The information emerged shortly before BlizzCon 2026 and is already attracting considerable attention from the gaming community.

Blizzard Outperformed Other Xbox Studios

The timing is particularly interesting given Microsoft’s major restructuring of Xbox. In July, Microsoft announced plans to cut around 3,200 jobs, restructure parts of its gaming organization, and make significant changes to its studio portfolio. The company acknowledged that Xbox is facing financial pressure and needs to rethink its strategy.

Against this backdrop, Blizzard’s performance looks remarkably different. While Microsoft is cutting costs and reconsidering its portfolio of studios, Blizzard reportedly ended FY26 with growth and emerged as the best-performing studio within Xbox, according to its internal assessment.

Faries also highlighted another important achievement: FY26 was reportedly Blizzard’s first year of consecutive quarterly growth since the launch of Overwatch in 2016. That is a particularly significant milestone for a company that has gone through several difficult years.

Diablo 4 and Overwatch Were Key Drivers

One of the biggest contributors to Blizzard’s performance was Diablo 4. The game continues to receive major content updates, while the Lord of Hatred expansion became one of the projects specifically highlighted by Blizzard’s leadership.

Overwatch was another major contributor. According to Faries, the game delivered its best quarter since 2022. That is particularly notable for a title that has faced considerable criticism from players in recent years. Blizzard has been gradually rebuilding interest in its hero shooter, and improving financial performance could give the team more room to expand the game further.

The success therefore cannot be attributed to a single new release. Blizzard generates revenue from several major franchises, including Diablo, Overwatch, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone. This diversified portfolio makes the studio especially valuable within Microsoft.

Microsoft Needs Successful Studios More Than Ever

At first glance, it may seem contradictory that Blizzard became Microsoft’s leading studio at a time when Xbox is going through one of its most difficult periods. However, that is exactly what makes the result so important.

Microsoft is moving away from a strategy focused on maintaining an ever-growing collection of studios and toward tighter cost control and greater concentration on its strongest projects. In its official Xbox statement, the company emphasized the need to simplify its management structure, focus investments on key areas and make difficult decisions about its studios.

Blizzard fits that strategy extremely well. The company already has enormous audiences, recognizable brands and games capable of generating revenue for many years. At the same time, Blizzard is not dependent on a single release: World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch and Hearthstone provide several separate sources of income.

This becomes even more important when considering Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The approximately $69 billion deal was one of the biggest investments in the history of the games industry and represented a massive bet on established gaming franchises. Blizzard’s current performance suggests that the acquisition may be becoming increasingly valuable for Microsoft.

What Does This Mean for Blizzard’s Future?

The most interesting part may be what happens next. Blizzard is celebrating its 35th anniversary, while BlizzCon 2026 is scheduled for September. Microsoft has already positioned the current period as an important one for Blizzard, with Diablo, World of Warcraft, Overwatch and Hearthstone among the company’s major franchises.

Strong financial results give Blizzard a much stronger position within Xbox. If the studio can maintain its growth, Microsoft will have a clear incentive to increase investment in its projects rather than reduce them.

For players, that could be good news. Blizzard still has a huge number of established franchises that can be expanded, and the success of its current games could create opportunities for new projects and experiments in the Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo and Overwatch universes.

Of course, strong financial results do not automatically mean that every Blizzard game is successful with its players. The company continues to face criticism, particularly over monetization and some of its decisions regarding live-service games. From a business perspective, however, FY26 appears to have been an exceptionally strong year.

While Xbox is going through one of the biggest transformations in its recent history, Blizzard became Microsoft’s leading studio — and may now be one of the strongest arguments that Microsoft’s massive Activision Blizzard acquisition can ultimately deliver the results the company was hoping for.
