AI in Gaming Monitors: What Smart Displays Can Do in 2026

AI in gaming monitors is gradually turning from a marketing buzzword into a collection of practical features. Manufacturers are already using artificial intelligence to automatically adjust image settings, change crosshair colors, improve visibility in dark areas and even create glasses-free 3D effects.

For years, the main things gamers looked at when choosing a gaming monitor were refresh rate, response time, resolution and panel technology. Now there is another question worth asking: what can the monitor’s built-in AI actually do?

AI Is Moving Into the Display

When gamers hear about AI, they usually think of technologies such as NVIDIA DLSS, frame generation or AI-powered upscaling. However, artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of the monitor itself.

One of the most interesting examples comes from ASUS ROG gaming monitors. Their AI features can analyze what is displayed on the screen and automatically adjust certain image parameters. For example, AI Visual can recognize different types of content and select suitable display settings without requiring the user to manually switch between profiles.

That is considerably more interesting than simply adding another preset called “Game Mode.”

A Smart Crosshair That Changes Color

AI can also be used for something as simple as making a crosshair easier to see.

Some ASUS gaming monitors feature Dynamic Crosshair technology, which can automatically change the crosshair color depending on the background. If the selected color becomes difficult to see against a particular surface, the system switches to a more contrasting one.

This may sound like a small feature, but in a fast-paced FPS, losing sight of the crosshair for even a moment can be annoying.

There are also more controversial features such as AI Sniper, which can enlarge the central part of the image to make distant targets easier to see. ASUS presents this primarily as a training feature.

For single-player games, such tools can simply be interesting extras. In competitive shooters, however, they raise a more important question: where does a useful display feature end and an unfair gameplay advantage begin?

AI Can Make Enemies Easier to Spot in Dark Areas

Another interesting application is AI-powered shadow enhancement.

The monitor analyzes the image and improves visibility in dark areas, potentially making enemies hiding in poorly lit parts of a map easier to spot. ASUS specifically positions its shadow-enhancement technology as a way to improve visibility during gameplay.

This is where AI becomes more than a picture-quality feature. It can directly affect how easily a player sees what is happening in the game.

Still, calling this a full-fledged “AI that plays for you” would be an exaggeration. The monitor is not predicting an opponent’s strategy or making decisions for the player. It is analyzing the image and dynamically changing display parameters.

Samsung Takes AI Into 3D

Samsung is taking a different approach.

The company has been developing AI-powered 3D features for its Odyssey displays. The technology can convert video content into 3D while eye tracking and view mapping help create a stereoscopic image without requiring special glasses.

This is particularly interesting because AI is no longer simply another option hidden inside the monitor’s settings menu. It becomes part of the way the display itself generates and presents visual content.

Samsung is also pushing traditional gaming-monitor specifications at the same time. Its latest Odyssey lineup includes high-resolution displays with very high refresh rates, showing that manufacturers are not choosing between raw performance and smart features — they are trying to combine both.

Does an Average Gamer Actually Need AI?

This is where things get interesting.

Most AI features in gaming monitors are still far from essential. If a gamer buys a high-quality OLED display with a high refresh rate, low response time and good HDR performance, the lack of AI is unlikely to ruin the experience.

Some features are also useful only in specific genres. AI-assisted crosshairs and visibility enhancements make the most sense in FPS games, while automatic picture optimization can be useful for people who frequently switch between different games and types of content.

AI-powered 3D is an entirely different category aimed at players who want to experiment with new display technologies.

For everyone else, these features are more of a bonus than a reason to replace an otherwise excellent monitor.

The Gaming Monitor Is Becoming Smarter

The most important trend is not that every gaming monitor will suddenly become an independent AI computer.

Instead, displays are gaining their own ability to understand what is happening on the screen and react accordingly.

Today, that might mean changing a crosshair color, brightening dark areas or automatically selecting an image profile. Tomorrow, a monitor could identify the genre of a game, choose an appropriate HDR configuration, adjust sharpness and contrast for a particular scene, or adapt the picture to the lighting conditions in the room.

That is why AI in gaming monitors is worth watching even if the technology is not yet essential.

The gaming monitor is gradually evolving from a passive display into an active part of the gaming experience. And unlike some AI features that exist mainly because manufacturers want to put “AI” on the box, this particular trend already offers functions that players can actually notice while gaming.
