The Witcher Remake paused development, with CD Projekt confirming that work on the highly anticipated remake of the original RPG has been temporarily put on hold. However, the project has not been cancelled. The main reasons are its technological dependencies on The Witcher 4 and the need to redirect Fool’s Theory’s resources toward other projects in the franchise.
Why Was Development Put on Hold?
The remake of the original The Witcher is being developed by Polish studio Fool’s Theory in cooperation with CD Projekt Red. The project was officially announced back in 2022, but there have been relatively few updates since then.
The latest information explains why progress has been slower than many fans expected. According to CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski, Fool’s Theory was originally expected to focus on the first Witcher remake. During development, however, the company realized that the project depended on certain technologies and production solutions being developed for The Witcher 4.
CD Projekt had previously explained that development of The Witcher Remake had been temporarily integrated with the production process of The Witcher 4. The goal is to use assets, tools and production pipelines created for the newer game to make development of the remake more efficient.
In other words, the decision to pause the project does not appear to be a sign that CD Projekt has lost interest in it. Instead, the company wants to wait until the necessary technology is ready.
Fool’s Theory Has Other Priorities
There is another important factor behind the delay. Most of Fool’s Theory’s current workforce is focused on The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, while a smaller part of the team is helping with The Witcher 4.
That leaves limited resources for active development of the remake.
From CD Projekt’s perspective, the priorities are understandable. Songs of the Past is a much closer-term project, while The Witcher 4 is one of the company’s biggest long-term productions. The remake of the original game can therefore remain on the back burner, especially when its development already depends on technology being created for The Witcher 4.
The Witcher Remake Has Not Been Cancelled
The most important part of the announcement is that The Witcher Remake has not been cancelled.
CD Projekt describes the situation as a temporary pause rather than the end of development. The company continues to include the remake among its long-term Witcher projects.
However, fans should not expect the game to return to the spotlight anytime soon. Fool’s Theory first needs to complete its current work, while CD Projekt needs to establish the technological foundation required for the remake.
This could mean another long period without major announcements. More substantial information is likely to appear only when the development team officially returns to full production.
What Can We Expect From the Remake?
The project remains particularly interesting because the original The Witcher was released in 2007. While the game is still remembered fondly by fans, its visuals, combat and several gameplay systems have aged considerably.
CD Projekt has previously confirmed that the remake is being developed using Unreal Engine 5. The goal is expected to be a full modern remake rather than a simple visual upgrade.
That raises an important question: how much will Fool’s Theory change the original game?
A modern remake could bring the first Witcher closer to the structure and gameplay standards of the later entries in the series while preserving its story, characters and key events. It could also give new players a much more accessible way to experience the beginning of Geralt of Rivia’s video game journey.
For now, though, patience will be required. The Witcher Remake paused development, but the project is still alive. Its future is closely tied to the technological progress of The Witcher 4.
The delay may be frustrating for fans, but it is not the same as cancellation. CD Projekt appears to be building the foundation first — and returning to the remake when the necessary tools and resources are ready.
