Microsoft is preparing a major change to Xbox Cloud Gaming. Starting in November 2026, cloud gaming will no longer offer unlimited access as part of eligible Xbox Game Pass plans. Each subscription tier will receive a monthly time allowance, while additional hours will be available for purchase once the limit is reached.
How Many Cloud Gaming Hours Will Players Get?
The new limits will depend on the Game Pass subscription tier:
- Game Pass Ultimate — 15 hours per month;
- Game Pass Premium — 10 hours per month;
- Game Pass Essential — 5 hours per month.
At the moment, eligible Game Pass subscribers can use cloud gaming without monthly time limits. This makes the upcoming change particularly significant for players who regularly stream games instead of downloading them to a console or PC.
Microsoft says the change is expected to affect around 4% of Game Pass subscribers. According to the company, most users do not spend enough time streaming games to regularly reach the new limits.
What Happens When the Limit Is Reached?
Once the included cloud gaming hours have been used, subscribers will be able to purchase additional playtime through the Xbox Store.
Microsoft has not yet announced the price of additional hours. More information is expected before the new system launches in November.
This means Xbox Cloud Gaming is moving toward a usage-based model. A Game Pass subscription will provide a specific amount of cloud gaming time, while heavier users will have the option to pay for additional hours.
There is another important change as well. Starting in November, players will be able to use Xbox Cloud Gaming without a Game Pass subscription by purchasing cloud playtime and streaming eligible games they already own.
Why Is Microsoft Limiting Cloud Gaming?
Microsoft says the main reason is the growing cost of operating cloud gaming infrastructure.
The company explains that the cost of providing cloud gaming increases as more people use the service and spend longer periods playing. Monthly limits should help Microsoft manage those expenses while continuing to invest in the reliability and performance of the service.
From a business perspective, the reasoning is understandable. Cloud gaming requires substantial server resources because every streamed gaming session creates an ongoing infrastructure load.
For players, however, the situation is more complicated.
Why Are Players Concerned?
One of the biggest advantages of Game Pass has been the ability to access games through the cloud without installing them locally.
This is particularly useful for players who use mobile devices, older consoles or hardware that cannot run newer games natively. Microsoft also points out that Cloud Gaming allows Xbox One owners to access eligible Xbox Series X|S titles without immediately upgrading their hardware.
The new system means that frequent cloud players will have to keep track of their remaining monthly hours.
The impact will depend heavily on the price of additional playtime. Microsoft has not yet revealed that information, so it is still difficult to determine how expensive the new system will actually be for regular users.
What Does This Mean for Game Pass?
For casual users, the change may not be particularly significant. Five, ten or fifteen hours per month could be enough for occasional gaming, trying new titles or playing while traveling.
For players who use cloud gaming as their primary way of accessing Xbox games, however, the change is much more important.
Instead of being an effectively unlimited feature of Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming will become a resource with a monthly allowance. Heavy users will potentially have to pay more if they want to continue streaming after reaching their limit.
Microsoft Is Not Abandoning Cloud Gaming
Despite the restrictions, Microsoft is clearly not abandoning cloud gaming. In fact, the company is expanding access by allowing players to purchase cloud gaming time without maintaining a Game Pass subscription.
The biggest unanswered question is therefore simple: how much will additional cloud gaming time cost?
If the price is reasonable, the new system could be seen as a more flexible way to pay for occasional cloud access. If the additional hours are expensive, however, regular users may begin questioning the value of Game Pass for cloud gaming.
The new limits are scheduled to take effect in November 2026. Microsoft says it will provide more information about pricing, eligible games, regional availability and how players can check their remaining cloud gaming time before the changes launch.
