The GTA VI leaks have finally received an official response from Rockstar Games. After several days of silence, the studio publicly addressed the massive leak of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay footage on August 26, just one day before the planned official extended presentation of the game.
The situation escalated after numerous gameplay clips, map images and other materials began appearing online. The leaked content quickly spread across social media and video platforms, with some fans encountering spoilers without actively searching for them. Rockstar had remained largely silent while the number of leaked materials continued to grow.
Rockstar Calls the Leaks Heartbreaking
In its statement, Rockstar acknowledged the impact the situation had on the development team. The studio described the unauthorized release of GTA VI gameplay footage as “heartbreaking” and stressed that this was obviously not how it intended players to see the game after such a long wait.
Rockstar also apologized for how long development has taken and for the limited amount of official information shared with the community. The studio said it understands that fans have been waiting for more details and gameplay for a long time.
At the same time, Rockstar made it clear that development is nearly complete. The team remains focused on finishing GTA VI and delivering the level of quality players expect from the series.
Rockstar Does Not Focus on the Leaker
Interestingly, Rockstar did not spend much of its statement discussing the person or group responsible for the leaks. Instead, the studio focused on the effect the situation has had on its developers and on its relationship with the community.
The leaks have been associated with the Cyberleek account or group, which has published multiple GTA VI gameplay clips throughout August. The leaked materials reportedly included gameplay scenes, map-related content and other parts of the upcoming game.
Meanwhile, Take-Two Interactive has taken legal steps in an attempt to identify those responsible for distributing the leaked material. Reports have indicated that the publisher sought information from companies including Microsoft and Discord as part of the investigation.
Rockstar Asks Fans to Wait
The main message from Rockstar was straightforward: despite the GTA VI leaks, the studio wants players to experience the game for themselves.
Rockstar acknowledged that some of the leaked material could potentially affect the intended experience through spoilers. However, the developers asked fans to wait just a little longer and discover the game when it officially launches.
There is not much longer to wait. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced another delay following the leaks.
The Official GTA VI Showcase Went Ahead
Despite the leak, Rockstar did not cancel its planned marketing campaign. On August 27, the company released Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look.
The extended presentation premiered on Netflix before becoming available through Rockstar’s official YouTube channel and the GTA VI website. Unlike the leaked footage, this is official material prepared and released by Rockstar itself.
The studio also confirmed that the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, giving players an official look at the game ahead of its November launch.
The GTA VI Release Plans Remain Unchanged
So far, Rockstar has not announced any major changes to GTA VI because of the leaks. The company continued with its planned presentation and maintained the November 19 release date.
For Rockstar, the incident is undoubtedly an unpleasant moment ahead of one of the biggest releases in the company’s history. However, the official Extended Look has now shifted much of the conversation back toward the game itself rather than the leaked material.
With several months still remaining before launch, Rockstar is likely to reveal more official information about GTA VI. For now, the studio’s message is clear: the leaks may have changed how some fans discovered the game, but Rockstar still wants the final experience to come directly from the developers.
