S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 exclusivity has once again become a hot topic across the gaming community after reports suggested that Microsoft fully financed the game’s development and secured special exclusive rights. However, GSC Game World has now officially denied those claims, stating that the information circulating online is inaccurate.
The controversy began after comments made by GSC Game World founder Sergiy Grygorovych in a recent interview. Some media outlets and social media users interpreted his statements as confirmation that Xbox had paid for the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl, leading to widespread speculation about Microsoft’s involvement and the game’s exclusivity status.
In response, GSC Game World released an official statement clarifying that these conclusions were based on an incorrect interpretation of the interview. According to the studio, Grygorovych was not involved in negotiations with Microsoft or the day-to-day development of the project, meaning his comments should not be treated as an authoritative explanation of the agreements between the two companies.
The developers also emphasized that they cannot disclose the details of their partnership with Microsoft because of confidentiality agreements. Nevertheless, they made it clear that the rumors claiming Microsoft financed the entire project or secured permanent exclusive rights are simply false.
The clarification effectively puts an end to the latest wave of speculation surrounding S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 exclusivity. While the game originally launched as a timed console exclusive within the Xbox ecosystem and was available on Xbox Game Pass from day one, its platform strategy has evolved significantly over time.
Earlier this year, GSC Game World announced support for Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing players who own the digital version through Microsoft’s ecosystem to play seamlessly on both Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC without purchasing the game twice. More recently, the studio also confirmed that the first story expansion will launch simultaneously across multiple platforms, including PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, and Xbox.
These announcements suggest that GSC Game World is focused on reaching the widest possible audience rather than maintaining long-term platform exclusivity. As a result, industry analysts believe discussions about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 exclusivity are becoming increasingly outdated, especially now that the game is available across several major platforms.
The situation also serves as another reminder of how quickly incomplete quotes can spread across the internet and evolve into headlines that do not accurately reflect reality. In this case, the studio chose to step in directly to correct the narrative before the rumors gained even more momentum.
For now, GSC Game World remains focused on supporting S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 with regular updates and upcoming content expansions. Rather than fueling speculation about past agreements with Microsoft, the developers appear committed to growing the franchise and delivering new experiences for players on every supported platform.
