Epic Games is changing its approach to video game production, placing artificial intelligence at the center of its development strategy. Epic Games and AI are now connected by more than experiments and productivity tools: according to media reports, the company is moving one of its major projects toward an AI-first production model, in which neural networks are expected to play a significant role in generating code and artwork. The project in question is Epic Games’ collaboration with Disney, featuring the Marvel and Star Wars universes.
Epic Games Shifts Toward AI-First Development
According to Ars Technica, citing Bloomberg, developers working on the project have been instructed to make greater use of generative AI throughout production. This reportedly includes models such as Anthropic’s Claude for writing code and creating visual assets.
According to the reports, the team is expected to move away from the traditional approach of manually writing code and creating graphical assets. Instead, AI will handle a substantial portion of the work, while human developers focus on directing the process, reviewing results, and refining generated content.
The project is reportedly a shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters. Epic Games and Disney announced their collaboration in 2024, when Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games. The game was originally scheduled for release in March 2027, but its launch has now been delayed indefinitely.
As a result, Epic Games and AI have become part of a broader experiment: the company is testing how far automation can go in the production of big-budget video games.
What Epic Games Leadership Says About AI
Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has confirmed that the company is undergoing a major restructuring of its workflows to accelerate AI adoption. According to Sweeney, the goal is not to have fewer employees produce the same amount of content, but to enable teams to create more and improve the quality of their projects.
This position is consistent with the company’s broader vision for the future of game development. Epic sees artificial intelligence as a way to accelerate technical tasks, simplify content creation, and expand developers’ creative capabilities.
However, these ambitions do not eliminate practical concerns. Improving productivity is not the same as guaranteeing better results. AI-generated materials still need to be reviewed, corrected, and integrated into a game. This becomes especially challenging in large projects, where code, animations, visual effects, and gameplay systems must work together seamlessly.
How AI Is Changing Unreal Engine
Epic Games’ strategy extends beyond a single project. The company is also developing AI capabilities for its Unreal Engine technology.
In June 2026, Epic outlined its plans for Unreal Engine 6. One of the key directions is integrating AI tools directly into developers’ workflows. Experimental features in Unreal Engine 5.8, for example, allow models such as Claude to connect to projects through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
This goes beyond using a chatbot that simply suggests code snippets or explains errors. With the right integration, AI can become an active participant in a development workflow, helping execute tasks within a specific production environment.
For smaller studios, these tools could lower the barriers to game development. Larger companies could use them to accelerate content production and reduce the time required to implement complex ideas. However, their effectiveness will depend on model quality, integration, and how much work still requires human expertise.
Why the Decision Is Controversial
The central question is what role people will play in making video games if AI begins writing most of the code and generating substantial portions of the artwork.
Supporters argue that automation can free developers from repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on game design, mechanics, and creative decisions. Critics worry about reduced demand for certain jobs, weaker artistic originality, and the risk of content being produced without adequate quality control.
There is also a practical issue: generative AI does not guarantee technically correct code, consistent visuals, or an engaging gameplay experience. The larger the project, the more important it becomes to validate individual assets and ensure that different development teams remain aligned.
Epic Games has already encountered challenges related to AI in games. The company previously experimented with an AI-voiced Darth Vader character in Fortnite. That experience demonstrated why new technologies require careful configuration and oversight.
What This Means for the Future of Gaming
Epic Games’ move toward AI-first development could become an important test case for the entire gaming industry. If this approach accelerates production without sacrificing quality, other major publishers and studios may adopt similar workflows.
However, it is too early to conclude that traditional game development is disappearing. Even with extensive AI assistance, people will still need to establish the artistic direction, design gameplay systems, evaluate results, and make critical decisions.
Ultimately, players will care less about who wrote the code than about whether the finished game is worth playing. For Epic Games, the challenge is to demonstrate that artificial intelligence can do more than speed up production: it must also help create games that players genuinely want to experience.
