RuneScape: Dragonwilds continues to gain momentum as Jagex has confirmed that the survival RPG has now sold 1.3 million copies during its Steam Early Access period. According to CEO Jon Bellamy, the game has dramatically outperformed the studio’s original sales forecasts.
Bellamy revealed that Jagex initially expected Early Access sales to reach around 200,000 copies. Instead, the game quickly exceeded those projections, and sales have continued to grow steadily. Since the beginning of July alone, Dragonwilds has added approximately 100,000 new players, demonstrating that interest remains strong several months after launch.
One of the biggest surprises for the development team has been the game’s popularity across Asia. Jagex originally believed that the RuneScape universe and its distinctly British humor would primarily appeal to Western audiences. However, localized versions for China, Japan, and other Asian markets attracted a massive player base. During the game’s launch period, China accounted for roughly 41% of total sales, while it now consistently represents 15–20% of daily purchases.
The success has prompted Jagex to rethink its assumptions about international audiences. The studio acknowledged that RuneScape: Dragonwilds resonates with players far beyond its traditional fan base, opening the door for broader global expansion and future releases aimed at new markets.
The milestone follows an already successful Early Access period. After surpassing one million copies sold, Jagex introduced an extensive development roadmap featuring new regions, gameplay systems, quality-of-life improvements, and additional content updates. The full 1.0 release is currently scheduled for September 15, 2026, launching simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S
For Jagex, RuneScape: Dragonwilds represents an important step beyond the traditional MMORPG formula. By combining survival mechanics, base building, exploration, and RPG progression within the RuneScape universe, the studio has managed to attract both longtime fans and an entirely new audience.
If current sales momentum continues, RuneScape: Dragonwilds could become one of Jagex’s most successful releases in recent years. With its console launch approaching and regular content updates planned after release, the game appears well-positioned for continued growth throughout 2026 and beyond.
