Blizzard has finally brought one of its most iconic universes back into the spotlight. During BlizzCon 2026, the company officially revealed a new StarCraft open-world shooter. Instead of returning to the traditional real-time strategy format, Blizzard is taking the franchise in a completely different direction with a story-driven shooter set in an open world. The game is currently scheduled to launch in spring 2030.
StarCraft takes a new direction
The new game is simply called StarCraft. Blizzard has made it clear that this is not another traditional RTS and not a conventional continuation of StarCraft II’s gameplay formula. Instead, the project is described as an original open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe.
The game is being led by Dan Hay, a veteran developer who previously held senior creative roles at Ubisoft and worked on the Far Cry franchise. Hay introduced the project during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony, explaining that the team wants to experience StarCraft from a completely different perspective — not from above the battlefield, but directly on the ground.
A story set decades after StarCraft II
The new StarCraft open-world shooter will take players back to the Koprulu Sector decades after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void. Current information places the game roughly 70 years after the conclusion of StarCraft II.
The cinematic trailer shown at BlizzCon focuses heavily on human forces and their conflict with the Zerg. The United Earth Directorate also plays an important role in the revealed material as a new confrontation begins to take shape.
However, Blizzard has not yet revealed the protagonist, detailed story structure, or specific missions. The BlizzCon presentation featured a cinematic reveal rather than actual gameplay footage.
An open world from the soldier’s perspective
The most interesting part of the announcement is obviously the game’s format. The StarCraft open-world shooter will allow players to experience the franchise from the perspective of a soldier rather than commanding entire armies from a strategic map.
Blizzard describes the project as taking place in a “living universe,” with a strong emphasis on experiencing the war from the ground. The reveal trailer suggests that players will face the Zerg while experiencing the scale of the conflict from the perspective of an individual combatant.
There are still many unanswered questions. Blizzard has not explained how large the open world will be, whether it will include side activities and exploration, or how much freedom players will have when approaching missions. Cooperative gameplay and other multiplayer features have also not been confirmed.
Blizzard is trying StarCraft shooters again
This is not Blizzard’s first attempt to turn StarCraft into a shooter.
The most famous example is StarCraft: Ghost, which was announced back in 2002 as a console action game. After years of development difficulties, the project was eventually cancelled. Blizzard later worked on another StarCraft shooter reportedly known as Ares, but that project was also cancelled.
The new project therefore represents Blizzard’s third major attempt to reinvent StarCraft as a shooter. This time, however, the studio is going significantly further by combining the franchise with an open-world structure.
When will the new StarCraft be released?
Blizzard has announced spring 2030 as the release window for StarCraft. That means the game is still several years away, and many important details remain unknown.
The company has not yet confirmed the exact platforms, pricing, or multiplayer features. Full gameplay has also not been shown, so it is too early to judge the combat system, world size, or technical quality.
Nevertheless, the announcement has already become one of the biggest reveals of BlizzCon 2026. After years away from the spotlight, StarCraft is finally returning — but not in the way many fans expected.
For longtime RTS players, the new direction may come as a surprise. Yet if Blizzard can successfully combine the atmosphere of StarCraft with the scale and freedom of a modern open-world shooter, the project could open an entirely new chapter for the legendary franchise.
