Blizzard has finally confirmed what Diablo fans have been waiting for: Diablo V officially announced at BlizzCon 2026. The next major entry in the iconic action RPG franchise is now in development and is scheduled to launch in Spring 2029. Blizzard also revealed the first details about the game’s story, world, classes, and itemization.
Diablo Has Already Won
Diablo V is taking the franchise in a very different direction. Previous games focused on heroes attempting to stop Sanctuary from falling to the forces of Hell. This time, the battle has already been lost.
Sanctuary has fallen. Diablo has won.
The heroes of the past have failed, allowing Diablo to conquer Sanctuary and use it as a stepping stone toward the Heavens. Players will enter a world already devastated by the forces of evil and will have to discover what it takes to survive after the apocalypse.
This premise could make Diablo V one of the darkest chapters in the franchise. Instead of trying to prevent the destruction of Sanctuary, players will experience a world that is already being reshaped by Diablo’s victory.
New and Returning Classes
Blizzard revealed the first three classes during the Diablo V presentation. The game will feature the returning Demon Hunter and Monk, alongside the brand-new Plague Knight.
The Plague Knight is particularly intriguing. Blizzard has not revealed every detail about the class yet, but its design appears to revolve around disease and corruption, potentially introducing a completely new gameplay style to the series.
Players will take on the role of the Heir to Westmarch, traveling across the ruined world alongside a growing caravan of survivors. The journey will take them through a Sanctuary actively transformed by Diablo’s rule.
Blizzard has also stated that Diablo V will feature more classes than any previous Diablo game.
Classic Itemization Returns
Another major part of the reveal is Blizzard’s approach to itemization. The developers are drawing inspiration from Diablo II, with a renewed focus on making equipment memorable, distinctive, and valuable for different builds.
Set items are returning, while the game will also feature Runes and Runewords. Blizzard is experimenting with stat requirements for equipment as well.
Inventory management is also becoming more important. Larger pieces of equipment will once again occupy multiple inventory slots, echoing the classic Diablo II system.
For longtime fans, these changes could be particularly significant after years of debate surrounding Diablo IV’s itemization.
A Long Road to Release
Although the announcement is already official, Blizzard has emphasized that Diablo V is still in early development. The studio plans to begin sharing regular updates with the community starting in 2027.
The current release target is Spring 2029, meaning players still have several years to wait. Blizzard appears to be giving the team plenty of time to develop the game’s systems while also involving the community in the conversation about its future.
The reveal makes it clear that Blizzard sees Diablo V as the beginning of a new era for the franchise rather than simply another sequel.
What About Diablo IV?
The announcement of Diablo V does not mean that Blizzard is abandoning Diablo IV. The current game will continue receiving new content and updates.
At BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard announced a new Amazon class for Diablo IV, planned for the first half of 2027, along with a special anniversary season celebrating 30 years of Diablo.
This means Diablo fans will have plenty to look forward to while waiting for the next game. Diablo IV will continue to evolve, while Blizzard gradually reveals more of its vision for Diablo V.
Diablo V officially announced — and the next era of Sanctuary has begun. With a darker premise, classic-inspired itemization, returning fan-favorite classes, and the new Plague Knight, Blizzard is clearly aiming to take the series in a bold new direction.
