Xbox Takes Over PHYSINT After Sony Leaves Kojima’s Game

PHYSINT by Hideo Kojima has unexpectedly changed publishers. The action-espionage game, originally developed in partnership with PlayStation Studios, will now continue under a new publishing partnership with Xbox. The move came after Sony decided to step away from the project, forcing Kojima Productions to spend three months searching for a new partner. The studio eventually found one in Microsoft, which is already working with Kojima on the horror title OD.

Sony Walked Away From PHYSINT

PHYSINT was first revealed in January 2024 as Hideo Kojima’s new action-espionage project. The announcement immediately attracted significant attention because the game represented Kojima’s return to the genre that made him famous through the Metal Gear series.

However, the partnership changed in June 2026. According to Kojima, Kojima Productions unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that it would cancel its involvement with PHYSINT.

Instead of abandoning the project, Kojima Productions began searching for another publishing partner. Kojima later confirmed that the studio spent approximately three months negotiating with potential partners before reaching an agreement with Xbox.

Sony has not indicated that it has completely ended its relationship with Kojima Productions. PlayStation said it still has great admiration for Kojima’s creative vision and described the decision as stepping away from the specific PHYSINT collaboration.

Why Did Sony Leave the Game?

Sony has not publicly provided a detailed explanation. However, a report from Bloomberg cited several concerns surrounding the project.

According to the report, PHYSINT was facing budget growth and missed deadlines, while Sony also had concerns about the project’s potential profitability and exclusivity arrangements. These factors reportedly contributed to PlayStation’s decision to withdraw from the game.

The decision also reportedly came against the background of Sony’s expectations for Kojima’s previous games. PlayStation had previously published Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2, but Bloomberg reported that their financial performance did not meet the company’s expectations.

In other words, Sony’s decision appears to have been driven more by the business risks surrounding PHYSINT than by a loss of respect for Kojima himself.

Xbox Becomes the New Partner

After Sony stepped away, Kojima Productions began looking for a new publisher. The search ended with Xbox.

Kojima said that his studio found Xbox to be a partner that shares its vision for the future of PHYSINT. Xbox also described the deal as an expansion of its existing relationship with Kojima Productions, which already includes the upcoming horror game OD.

The deal represents a significant win for Microsoft. PHYSINT is not simply another project from a recognizable developer. It is Kojima’s return to action-espionage and is widely viewed as a spiritual successor to some of the ideas associated with Metal Gear.

However, it is too early to call PHYSINT an Xbox exclusive. The companies have officially confirmed the new publishing partnership, but a complete platform list has not been announced.

What Do We Know About PHYSINT?

Very little is currently known about the game’s story and gameplay systems. Kojima has described PHYSINT as a next-generation action-espionage project designed to blur the boundaries between games and cinema.

Several actors have already been announced for the project, including Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-Seok, also known as Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe. Kojima Productions previously presented the project in partnership with PlayStation, but development has continued despite Sony’s withdrawal.

The most important news for fans is therefore that PHYSINT has survived the publisher change. The project has not been cancelled and will continue under the new Xbox partnership.

A Major Win for Xbox

The move of PHYSINT by Hideo Kojima from PlayStation to Xbox is one of the most surprising publisher changes of 2026.

Sony had been one of Kojima’s most important partners for years and played a major role in bringing Kojima Productions’ independent projects to the market. Now Microsoft is positioned to publish both of the studio’s major upcoming projects: OD and PHYSINT.

The partnership could also become broader than video games. Xbox and Kojima Productions have confirmed plans to explore collaborations across film and television, potentially expanding the relationship into other forms of entertainment.

For Sony, the situation is considerably more uncomfortable. A project that began as a PlayStation partnership will now continue with support from one of its biggest competitors.

For Kojima Productions, however, the outcome is much more positive: PHYSINT remains alive, development continues, and the studio has found a new partner willing to support its ambitious vision.
